Mahmoud Mohieldin: Sharm El-Sheikh adaptation Agenda gives priority to the water file and is the result of partnerships with non-state actors, climate champions and members of the Race to Zero campaign

The regional round table in Addis Ababa resulted in a number of bankable projects in the water sector

Dr. Mahmoud Mohieldin, UN climate change high level champion for Egypt and UN special envoy on financing 2030 sustainable development agenda, stressed the importance of the role of scientific research and technology in supporting adaptation measures in the water sector, stressing the need to provide necessary data.

His remarks came during his speech during a session on implementing adaptation measures in the water sector, within the framework of the Water Day activities at the COP27, in the presence of the Dutch envoy for water affairs Henk Offenk.

During his speech, Mohieldin indicated that Sharm El-Sheikh adaptation agenda gives priority to the water file and is a result of partnerships with non-state actors, climate champions and members of the Race to Zero campaign.

The climate champion noted the need for better water management systems by relying on science and technology, which also contributes to the development of early warning systems.

On the other hand, Mohieldin pointed to the importance of capacity building and providing the necessary training to support adaptation measures in the water sector.

With regard to the financing file, Mohieldin stressed that the percentage of private sector participation in financing adaptation does not exceed 3%, pointing to the role of voluntary institutions in this regard.

In another context, the climate champion referred to a number of implementable and bankable projects in the water sector that resulted from the regional round table in Addis Ababa.

Mohieldin pointed out that this is in light of strengthening partnerships between the public and private sectors, pointing to the importance of science technology in developing water resource management systems and seawater desalination .

During his speech, the climate champion also touched on the financing file, stressing the need to fulfill previous pledges, as only seven countries were committed to their share of the Copenhagen pledge, including France, Germany and Japan.

Mohieldin also called on other countries to take practical steps to advance the climate action agenda.

Mohieldin concluded his speech by emphasizing the role of leaders in finding the necessary solutions and strengthening climate resilience .
