At a time of escalating climate challenges and mounting pressure on natural resources, environmental awareness is no longer a luxury or a concern reserved for elites. It has become a societal necessity that touches every aspect of daily life—from water and electricity use to waste management, shopping habits, food choices, and transportation. Amid this global context, impactful initiatives arise from a simple belief: that awareness, when communicated in clear, relatable language, can transform knowledge into actionable sustainable behavior.
From this principle emerged the “My Environment, My Responsibility” initiative: a voluntary media project that began as a personal idea and, over three years, has grown into a beacon of environmental awareness within the UAE and beyond, aiming to build a responsible and sustainability-conscious society.
Founding the Initiative: A Scientific Journey Driven by Community Commitment
The initiative was founded by Dr. Heba Mohamed Emam, an Egyptian environmental consultant and expert residing in the UAE, with over 20 years of experience in sustainability and environmental awareness. Dr. Heba currently serves as Head of the Sustainability and Environment Department at Abu Dhabi Precast, part of Ascrob Holding Group, where she translates sustainability concepts into practical applications within the industrial sector, balancing economic growth with environmental responsibility.
Her scientific journey began with a deep passion for nature, evolving into a specialized academic path: a master’s degree in Environmental Sciences and Industrial Development, followed by a PhD in Environmental Engineering focused on waste management and the circular economy.
Dr. Heba’s work has earned significant recognition, including the UAE Golden Visa under the category of creatives in environmental media and women empowerment. She has received numerous awards such as the Master Mind Creative Writing Award (2023) and Best Content Creator in Grace Preservation (2024), alongside honors from the UAE Minister of Tolerance. Her participation in the “Egyptian Women Abroad” program by the National Training Academy strengthened her leadership skills and deepened her understanding of sustainable development, technology, and the Fourth Industrial Revolution, empowering her to transform knowledge into impactful community initiatives.
Launching “My Environment, My Responsibility”: From Idea to Wide Reach
The initiative began three years ago as a voluntary project with the goal of promoting environmental awareness across the UAE and the Arab world. Its approach simplifies scientific knowledge to reach a broad audience and encourage daily behavioral change.
Initially relying on voluntary articles shared across media platforms and social media, the initiative later expanded to produce content in both Arabic and English, engaging local and international audiences within the UAE’s multicultural society. To date, Dr. Heba has authored over 200 articles on environment, sustainable development, and women empowerment.
The initiative’s vision is to become a leading media lighthouse for environmental awareness, delivering messages in accessible language while encouraging measurable behavioral change. It aims to reach over one million readers, build partnerships with media and environmental organizations, and support global sustainability and carbon neutrality goals. Its primary audiences include students, youth, media institutions, and environmental entities.
Performance is measured using indicators such as number of articles, digital engagement, and outreach to non-Arabic speakers, ensuring the transition of knowledge into practical, sustainable daily practices.
Artificial Intelligence and the Environment: Using Technology with Awareness
Dr. Heba emphasizes the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in environmental protection. AI can analyze vast datasets from satellites, monitoring stations, and climate indicators, improving predictions of pollution, early detection of desertification, deforestation, and fires, and estimating climate risks such as heatwaves and floods.
AI also enhances waste management through optimized collection and sorting routes and helps reduce emissions by streamlining energy consumption. Yet, Dr. Heba stresses that technology alone is insufficient; reliable data, governance, policies, and public awareness are essential. Here, environmental media, as promoted by “My Environment, My Responsibility,” bridges science and society.

The initiative exemplifies positive environmental citizenship, connecting scientific expertise with accessible language. Protecting the environment is a shared responsibility, starting with individuals, supported by institutions, and guided by experts making knowledge actionable.
