DR.Ahmed Hany:The Dirty Bomb ..Long Term Environmental Weapon

The dirty bomb is a conventional bomb with a radioactive material and the explosive material forming a mixture. When it explodes it does not form the traditional pattern of the atomic or nuclear bomb.

It could be considered one of the tactical nuclear weapons. The resultant pollution may last for years ruining the buildings and land rendering them not suitable for life.

After exploding the bomb its radioactive substance affects people, animals and plants by inducing genetic errors and chromosomal defects which affects siblings with many deformities that some are lethal.

Building a dirty bomb is much easier than building a nuclear bomb and needs no sophisticated technologies.

It could be considered the mass destructive weapons of the poor along with the chemical and biological warfare equipment.

The radioactive elements that are used to build the dirty bomb are either uranium or cesium.

The resultant pollution may last for decades preventing people from using the lands and the affected people and animals will have high probabilities of giving birth to deformed babies.

The terrorist group el-Qaeda tried to get a nuclear bomb but failed, however they may try to build a dirty bomb.

This is one of the threats that pollute the environment and kill people.

Both Russia and Ukraine claim that the other country prepares to use a dirty bomb that may affect wide area in Europe and will affect the world.

The pollution that may happen may affect crops rendering them unsuitable for feeding people and animals.

Russia and Ukraine produce about one third of wheat.

Famines may strike badly the poor countries especially in Africa that are dependent on the Russian wheat.

It was claimed that Russia used a dirty bomb in Chechnya without good evidence.

However it was leaked by WikiLeaks that the United Stated used them in Iraq.

Some retired US soldiers broadcasted some short videos confessing that they were witness that the American army used it in Iraq.

Moreover their proof was that many babies were born with anomalies after the Americans occupied Iraq.

There should be investigations to study statistics and take specimen from land and buildings with genetic research to prove that.

Conclusion:

Both Russia and Ukraine have the capability to build the dirty bomb if any of them used it there will be sever pollution that may affect Europe and other parts of the world.

The risk of having this bomb by a terrorist group should be considered by security authorities around the world.
