DR.Ahmed Hany: Living with Climate Changes

Professor of Allergy, Chest and Environmental Medicine

The climate changes with draught and high temperatures became a reality.

The measures that governments are taking a mere talking and negotiations in conferences without proper actions.

The broken promises of the advanced countries and their insistence that the third world should participate more in financing the reform of what the advanced countries ruined halted any serious steps.

The problems of climate change will affect food and water supply and will spread diseases especially zoonosis to new wide areas including advanced countries.

The forests will be lost more by draughts and more widespread fire. All projects of green hydrogen are under construction and many need to be financed.

The water problem will go down the hill and a shortage of about 40% looms as sad destiny in 2030.

Famines will be widespread in poor countries and there is also a high risk that people in advanced countries will face a shortage of food.

Scientists have many solutions in their labs but transforming this solution to the real-life needs big investments that politicians and economists are not willing to supply it.

The poor third-world countries are cornered that they have nothing to do but to live with these drastic changes until the effects become so sever on the advanced countries and force them to seriously participate in a problem-solving process to save humanity.

Unfortunately the politicians in the advanced countries have aligned with multinational companies and big businessmen and they do not care about poor people anymore.

Moreover, it is expected that the water crisis may ignite wars in the third world with the shortage of water affecting countries that share the same river basins.

Famines may force countries to safeguard its water quotas and attacking other neighboring countries to ensure that they receive these quotas.

The world can ameliorate the food crisis by changing the kinds and pattern the people eat.

Lately, much talks about the cultivated meat and the consuming more plants.

Some talk about different plants that could be grinded to use its powder form instead of the flour to produce bread.

Whether these solutions are practical and economically possible is doubtful.

However, Egypt produced wheat that could be planted and irrigated with saline water and give higher tons per acre.

Some scientists suggest that the experience of countries should be shared to consume more varieties of food, for example many countries use bananas to produce bread.

Dates may fill a nutritional gap supplying people with calories and iron.

Many countries use some tree leaves as a food but others do not know about them.

At the same time the wastes of food should be reduced by wiser consuming the present food and encouraging people to buy what they need only.

Another problem of climate change that will drastically affect many people is the appearance of a new diseases in locations that do not witness now.

Higher temperatures and forest fires force many animals to move and these animals spread diseases.

For example if the forests in Africa are lost diseases like Dengue fever will be seen in North Africa.

As the climate changes affect the food chains many viruses and bacteria will infect more people who have not inheritant immunity against such diseases.

The Geographical Medicine maps will change in a way that the world will have new ones that could not be accurately predicted.

To acclimatize to climate changes there should be another thinking on how to solve problems.

For instance the discovery of new planting methods to have more crops and to change the bread or the main carbohydrate element to another forms of flour using banana, potatoes and other plants.

At the same time the world should be ready to meet more forest fires and more catastrophes.

It is observed that catastrophes in advanced countries leave few victims.

However in the third world countries usually the victims are multiplied to big numbers.

So building codes and training of people on how to behave during catastrophes is the way to live with the increased probability of destruction.

The government have to prioritize the water supply and desalination projects along with investing on researches on how to acclimatize to the hot weather.

As the maps of geographical medicine will witness big changes and moving of wild animals with the microbes they carry, the expectation of new diseases should be studied.

Unfortunately the last Covid-19 epidemic proved that the world is not ready to meet such epidemics.

Many researchers expect that the forthcoming epidemic will be more severe with more fatalities.

A new shape of health services is needed and one of them is the application of telemedicine with studying of better distribution of medication and wide broadcasting the home care methods for sick people.

Lastly, acclimatization to increasing temperature should be a part of any conferences and investing in application of the new ideas

The Conclusion:

The world is changing for worse due to climate changes.

There will be more catastrophes, more epidemics.

The poor countries are not responsible for that but they have to live with it.

Until the rich countries fulfil their promises and scientific advancement reaches new methods to clean the atmosphere with a reduction of temperature acclimatization on the present conditions should be a priority.
