Green Hydrogen–Integrated Pyrolysis Systems: A Pathway Toward Low-Carbon Bioenergy and Circular Economy

The integration of green hydrogen into pyrolysis systems represents a promising approach for advancing low-carbon bioenergy technologies and strengthening circular economy frameworks. Pyrolysis converts biomass and agro-industrial residues into value-added products such as biochar, bio-oil, and syngas, while green hydrogen is produced through renewable-powered water electrolysis, offering a carbon-free energy carrier.

When combined, green hydrogen can enhance the overall sustainability of pyrolysis-based systems. It may serve as a clean auxiliary energy source for reactor heating, partially replacing fossil-derived fuels, and can also be utilized in downstream upgrading processes to improve the quality and stability of bio-oil. This integration contributes to lower greenhouse gas emissions and higher energy efficiency across the biomass valorization chain.

From an environmental perspective, coupling green hydrogen with pyrolysis supports carbon mitigation strategies through dual mechanisms: renewable energy substitution and long-term carbon sequestration via biochar application in soils. Economically, such hybrid systems open new opportunities for decentralized energy production, particularly in agricultural regions with abundant biomass resources.

Overall, green hydrogen–integrated pyrolysis systems offer a strategic, scalable solution for sustainable waste management, renewable energy generation, and climate change mitigation. This synergy aligns well with global decarbonization targets and provides a viable technological pathway for future bio-based energy systems, especially in developing and transition economies.
