?What Is Biochar

Biochar is a plant-derived charcoal produced by heating plant residues in the absence of oxygen (or with very limited oxygen), causing the material to thermally decompose without fully combusting. The result is a carbon-rich substance that improves soil structure, retains water and nutrients, and reduces carbon emissions when buried in the soil.
Materials Needed
A metal barrel with a lid and bottom ventilation holes
Dry plant residues (branches, straw, stalks, nut shells)
A tight-fitting metal lid
A bucket of water (for extinguishing)

Production Steps
. 1Prepare the residues: Collect plant waste and dry it thoroughly to reduce smoke during burning.
.2 Fill the barrel: Fill the barrel with the residues without packing them too tightly, allowing air to pass through evenly.
. 3Top-lit ignition: Light the fire from the top layer and let it gradually consume oxygen downward — a technique known as Top-Lit UpDraft (TLUD), which reduces harmful emissions compared to bottom-lit ignition.
. 4Oxygen depletion stage: As combustion progresses, oxygen inside the barrel begins to deplete, and the visible flame turns into light smoke — a sign that the actual pyrolysis process has begun.
.5 Stop the process: Once the smoke becomes light and no flame is visible, seal the lid tightly to completely cut off oxygen and stop combustion before the residues turn to ash.
. 6Cool down: Let the barrel cool completely for 8–12 hours, or until the next day. Do not open it while still hot.
Preparing Biochar Before Use (Nutrient Charging)
Raw biochar should not be added directly to soil, as it may absorb nutrients from the soil rather than enriching it. Therefore:
Grind the finished biochar into small granules
Soak it in liquid organic fertilizer or compost tea
Leave it for 7–14 days, stirring occasionally, to allow it to absorb nutrients and beneficial microorganisms
How to Apply It to Soil
Mix the charged biochar with soil or compost at a ratio of 5–10% of soil volume (approximately 0.5–1 kg per square meter), then plant directly.
