AlProtein.. Pioneering Algae-Based and Plant-Based Protein Production in Egypt

By Mostafa Shaaban

Egypt’s first-of-its-kind biotech startup, AlProtein, harnesses the power of algae and aquatic plants to manufacture protein powders aided by artificial intelligence.

This innovative startup, brought to life by young scientists and entrepreneurs primarily from Zewail City of Science, Technology, and Innovation, stands as a testament to sustainable and efficient protein production.

What sets AlProtein apart is its ability to produce quality protein while emitting less carbon, utilizing underground water, and circumventing the need for fertile land — an asset for water-scarce regions.

Determined to establish a strong presence in European markets, AlProtein envisions itself as the beacon of self-reliant protein production for the Arab and African landscapes. The mission is clear: provide globally competitive protein while conserving Egypt’s foreign currency reserves.

Harnessing Domestic Resources to Achieve Global Standards

In conversation with Omar Zaghloul, AlProtein’s co-founder, it becomes evident that the enterprise employs local organic nutrients in its production, alleviating dependence on imports.

Their target audience?

Major players in the food industry, providing them with premium quality raw protein for incorporation into diverse products.

The masterminds behind AlProtein comprise 12 graduates and esteemed consultants from Zewail City and leading European universities.

Their expertise covers sectors ranging, from AI to water management.

A Vision for a Sustainable Meat Alternative

By 2025, AlProtein envisions its commercial-scale operation in full swing, and by 2030, they aim to replace 1,000 tons of traditional meat with their novel protein product.

Mahmoud Basyouni, Operations Lead at AlProtein, emphasizes AlProtein’s AlProtein’s alignment with multiple United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals: SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), and SDG 15 (Life on Land).

Their venture underscores the promise of nourishment, health, water conservation, sustainable industrial growth, innovation, ecological conservation, and combating climate change.

Why AlProtein Stands Out.

Mohamed AlMoatasem, another co-founder, highlights the distinct advantages of AlProtein:

– Eco-conscious endeavors that lower carbon footprints and champion carbon-neutral industrial and agricultural practices.

– Delivering nutritious, organic, gluten-free plant-based protein enriched with essential amino acids with favorable texture and formula.

-Pricing that combines sustainability with market competitiveness.

AlProtein’s cutting-edge technology and dedication have garnered widespread acclaim, bagging awards from notable entities like the United Nations Innovation Fund, the European Union, USAID (United States Agency for International Development), GIZ (German Corporation for International Cooperation), and the 500 Startups accelerator in just six months.

Moreover, their distinction as the sole recipient from Egypt and the wider Arab region at the United Nations Innovation Fund qualifiers is noteworthy.

With their sights set on securing prominent global accreditation, AlProtein’s ambition is to revamp the Egyptian and Arab markets, delivering a product that not only matches international standards but also champions environmental and economic sustainability.
